《彩虹六号》是汤姆·克兰西的高科技惊悚小说，故事围绕主人公约翰·克拉克、丁·查韦斯和他们的多国反恐彩虹部队展开。
中央情报局特工人员约翰·克拉克，拥有许多与杰克·瑞安相同的特质，但也同时拥有九十年代后期某些人惯有的偏执：他笃信暴力可以解决一切，认为武力是吓阻恐怖主义的最佳手段。他鉴于在冷战结束后仍有许多恐怖份子继续在世界各地活动，因此向总统提议成立反恐怖活动的部队，以扫除世界上所有的恐怖主义。提议获得同意，克拉克也成了这支部队的总指挥。
于是，一支由美国中情局人员，结合英、法、德精 英所组成的特种部队便从而诞生，并取名为“彩虹”，而克拉克就是最高指挥官“彩虹六号”。
